I always wanted to build a barn. I started in the spring of 2016 searching plans on the internet. I found a simple plan I liked and could modify to fit my needs and the needs of the area to build upon.
The first hurdle was zoning. Since my land is less than 25 acres, I had to jump through some hurdles. Most people like zoning (including me) for everyone else but not for self! Anyway, with some communication and modification I was approved.
I was able to secure some old electric poles cheaply which would save a significant amount of money. The problem with old poles is they are not always exactly straight and tend to be bigger at the bottom then at the top. This presents chalanges in keeping the building square.
On the weekend of Sepetember 11, we rented a lift to ease in reaching the upper heights of the building. It worked very well and was fun to opperate.

The lift was so handy we again rented it the weekend of October 17 (see pictures at right). We were able to complete most of the high framing. I was amazed thinking how they built these farm structures 100 years ago... with no lifts, electricity, or power tools.

On Novemebr 20, we started on the siding. Up to this point I had only worked with corrgated sheet metal siding. This siding seemed to go on relatively easy and I became better as I went! I believe this type of siding/roofing is a litle easier to work with but you really need at least two people. By early December I was able to begin with a few roof pannels.
What a great experience, but I am glad this part is done! We built the shed with no injuries, which was one goal accomplished. I / we learned much along the way and have numerous ideas on how to build it better or easier. In the coming months I plan to level the dirt inside, put gravel down, hang guttering on the back, and eventually build a shop in the south end.
Building this was a family afair and help was provided in a variety of ways both directly and indirectly.
